Senior Mechanical Engineer

Location: North West UK (Warrington / Cheshire) - hybrid options

Contract: Permanent, Full-time

About the Role

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join their engineering team, supporting and leading complex, highly regulated projects across the UK. Working within a multi-discipline engineering environment, you will contribute to the full project lifecycle, from early FEED and concept development through to detailed design, construction, commissioning, and operational support.

You will be involved in specialist mechanical design work, handling systems, powder-processing technologies, and high-integrity systems used in controlled or highly regulated environments.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Design & Project Delivery

  • Deliver and manage technical mechanical engineering studies across concept, FEED, detailed design and commissioning phases.
  • Produce and review project deliverables including:
  • Technical notes & substantiation reports
  • Mechanical flow diagrams and flow-sheets
  • Mechanical drawings & layouts
  • P&IDs
  • Hazard and malfunction analyses
  • Technical specifications and supply-chain documentation reviews
  • Provide engineering support during construction and commissioning phases.

Specialist Mechanical Studies

  • Support and deliver studies relating to:
  • Mechanical handling and heavy transfer systems
  • Powder technologies (transport, milling, compaction)
  • High-integrity mechanical processes operating in glovebox or controlled environments
  • Mechanical dismantling and compaction technologies

Collaboration & Technical Leadership

  • Work collaboratively with multi-discipline engineering teams and project managers.
  • Maintain effective communication with technical specialists and subject-matter experts across the business.
  • Provide oversight and follow-up for contractor and supplier technical activities.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Our client welcomes applicants with strong technical backgrounds and transferable skills. Preferred experience includes:

Preferred Experience

  • 5+ years’ experience as a Mechanical Engineer
  • Experience delivering mechanical design across FEED, detailed design and technical specification stages
  • Background in nuclear, decommissioning, defence, energy, pharmaceuticals, or other highly regulated sectors
  • Experience delivering studies on mechanical handling, powder processing, or high-integrity mechanical systems
  • Understanding of design for manufacture, testing, installation, commissioning and maintenance
  • Contractor or supply-chain technical oversight experience
  • Experience working on regulated-site projects (e.g., nuclear, defence, scientific research)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Membership (or working towards membership) of a professional engineering institution such as IMechE
  • Eligible for UK Security Clearance (SC minimum)
  • Previous experience working on highly regulated or secure-site projects
